BIG IDEA

God is not accessed by systems and transactions.Jesus clears away the marketplace so we can come freely — by grace.

1. Passover — A Picture of the Gospel

John 2:13 | 1 Corinthians 5:7 | 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus went up to Jerusalem for Passover — the feast that pictures the whole Gospel. The wages of sin is death, and all have sinned. God is just; sin must be punished.

But grace provides a solution without giving up justice: substitution. God provides a pure, perfect Lamb to take our place. Jesus is our Passover Lamb.

2. Religion Turned Into a Marketplace

John 2:14

By Jesus' day, the temple system was run by money and power. The problems piled up:

• Religion turned into commerce — a marketplace atmosphere.Special coins and steep exchange rates made worship a burden. • Logistics crowded out God; performance became the point.The system served the administrators more than the worshippers.

Legalistic, performance-based religion is always a distraction from God.

3. The Whip and the Slavery It Exposed

John 2:15 | 2 Corinthians 8:9

Jesus made a whip and drove them out — acting as the rightful authority of God's house, with no fear and no self-interest, only passion for God to be worshiped and for people to have access to Him.

Why a whip? Whips drove Israel's slavery in Egypt. Jesus was showing they'd become slaves again — not to Egypt, but to their own religion. He poured out their false riches because He came to provide the true riches of grace.
